How to Keep Your Pillow Cleaner and Make It Last Longer

A pillow cannot last forever, but a few simple habits can reduce buildup and slow everyday wear.

Use a Zippered Pillow Protector

A pillowcase is the first layer, but it is not a complete barrier. A zippered protector adds another washable layer between the pillow and sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, saliva, hair products, and allergens.

A protector cannot stop the filling from wearing out, but it can help keep the pillow itself cleaner for longer.

Wash Pillowcases Regularly

Your pillowcase touches your face, hair, and skin every night. Regular washing removes much of the buildup before it reaches the protector or pillow.

Follow the Care Label

Some pillows are machine washable, while others must be spot-cleaned. Drying instructions also vary by material. Always check the care tag before washing; the wrong method can damage the fill, trap moisture, or permanently change the shape.

Keep the Pillow Completely Dry

Moisture is a common cause of lingering odor. If you wash a pillow, dry it completely before returning it to the bed. Never cover or use a pillow that is still damp.

A Simple Pillow-Care Routine

  • Use both a pillowcase and zippered protector.
  • Wash the pillowcase regularly.
  • Wash the protector according to its label.
  • Air the pillow when needed and keep it dry.
  • Inspect it periodically for stains, odor, lumps, and lost support.

The MyCleanPillow rule: protect it, wash what touches it, and replace it before it becomes unsupportive.
